A2G3: Discussion - Track Choice

On the 10th of September, the group sat down and discussed the different aspects of the two songs that we had narrowed down to, mostly concerning concepts and audience interest. The two candidates were:
  • Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Lorde
  • Jungle - Jamie N Commons and X Ambassadors
Isaac, had thought a great deal about Everybody Wants to Rule the World. His main concern was the first thirty seconds of the song, in which there is a minimal amount of music, the emphasis being on the vocals. This could theoretically put off the audience from continuing on watching the video.
Simultaneously, he felt that Jungle had a more potential for avoiding the above, as it is more upbeat and with good visuals could keep

Alex was mostly in agreement with Isaac, with a similar thought process behind the Lorde song. However, he was also prepared to do videos for either of the two songs, as he thought both had a lot of potential, despite the audience issue. As long as the visuals worked well with the song, the audience would continue watching the video regardless of the slow beginning.

Georgia came up with a music video concept for Jungle, in which:
An "average" citizen who is bored of his life spends his time working, and imagining how great his life could be if he only had the courage to make a stand and change it. Then at the chorus, he would carry out some animalistic deed such as punching his boss or flipping his desk over, only to realise it was a day dream at the end of the chorus.

Technical notes:
  • We thought it would be interesting to use static tripod shots during the slow verses to make the intentionally banal visuals even more lethargic, and handicam/fig rig shots in the energetic verses.
  • As this song has a very strong beat; creating a link between the cutting rate and the beat would be an interesting idea to play with. It was also suggested we experimented with various speeds of film, i.e. slow motion, normal speed and sped up, to affect how the audience views the scenario. It would also show advanced technical ability and could be very visually pleasing.

Normal speed to slow motion is effective, but flicking between fast-motion & slow-motion quickly can emphasise the slow-motion more For example, in 5 Seconds Of Summer’s She Looks So Perfect there is a lot of normal speed to slow-motion whenever anyone rips their clothes off (the concept of the video); this emphasises the action which is very effective & visually it smoothly fits with the audio. Georgia thought slow-motion would really fit with the chorus .e.g. the slow motion could start after the lyrics “into the-“& then start the slow-motion during the word “jungle as that word is dragged on for a little bit.

At the end of the day's lesson, we all agreed that Georgia's concept was a fun and interesting idea that was original and had room for further development. It was for this reason we decided that Jungle would be our song of choice.

However, on the same evening, Georgia also discovered a fatal flaw in the plan:

Even though we had searched for a music video before, and the search had turned up no results we discovered there was in fact an existing music video, meaning we can't use this song.

This prompted a discussion on Facebook over what the group was to do now, as our original concept and song had been thrown down the drain. A few more ideas were thrown about without much advance.

Alex suggested the following:
  • The song has to be audibly pleasing - the audience will have to want to listen to the song
  • The audience can be wide or niche, but should not be the driving force behind the style, genre or concept of the music video.
  • That Lorde, for the time being should be reconsidered once more, as it is only the first thirty seconds that are to be deemed quiet - combining the song with striking visuals will keep the audience interested.
