A2G3: Treatment

Following a long discussion last week, the group decided that we had to re-imagine the narrative of the music video. We agreed that it was too difficult to find adequate time and actors to establish the idea of PTSD, as we had originally intended. Thus, we developed a new concept, which has been developed below.

A young child, 12 years old, sits on a chair at a table, drawing and colouring in an imaginative but childish piece of artwork. Around him on the table and kitchen surfaces are empty bottles of wine, cans of beer, filled ashtrays and layers of dirt and grime. Everything appears grey and worn down, as if his parents don't care about the house or him. The focus is on the boy and his drawing, but we can see that in the background the Father is beating the Mother, the older brother is likewise up to no good (perhaps he is using the confusion to steal money from his Mum's purse, but only the protagonist sees). We begin to realise just how disturbing his life is.

He eventually retreats to his bedroom, sealing the door shut which symbolizes him blocking out the negative emotions that fill the house. He looks into his fairly plain room, and begins interacting with everything, winding up toys so they start moving about, lighting toys, turning things on etc. Suddenly the room is filled with life and color and everything has a magical quality to it. We realise that this room is a metaphor for the boy retreating within himself, to his "happy place" if you will. We see him on his adventures in his imagination, interacting with his family as if they were a normal, happy family (symbolizing his wish for normality).

Eventually as the song is reaching the end he leaves his bedroom, closing his door behind as if to protect his secret happiness. We see now that in reality his world is still troubled and failing, and he has been dreaming of a better place. We see in the background his family physically fighting and shouting, and he sags to the floor in sadness.
