A2G3: Progress Report

1.10.14

Today Georgia began investigating audience research, which we hope will allow us to understand what the potential audience expects from certain things such as from the artist, Lorde, or the subject of war/PTSD. Our group findings will be recorded in an audience research post and in the pitch.

Meanwhile, Isaac and Alex spent the lesson arguing and considering different narrative possibilities, brainstorming to try and produce the best possible narrative for our piece. Eventually we decided:
  • It would not be about PTSD as was previously decided, but rather the soldiers feelings upon returning to a broken home in a society which refuses to recognise the tremendous sacrifice he made in the war.
  • His lonliness and later his anger will be key themes of the music video
  • The video would show him becoming increasingly angry with the way his life has turned out, ending in a huge rage where he wants only to destroy things
Furthermore we realised that we disagreed strongly on the ending of the music video. Isaac suggested the soldier eventually commits suicide after his lonliness becomes too much. Alex however thought that this would be too emotionally challenging and perhaps disturbing. His suggestion was for the soldier to eventually collapse in the foetal position to signify him total defeated by his loneliness. Isaac thought that this was too dull and soft of an ending, and that it would mean very little happens in the story.

After much deliberation the group split for lunch and a friend of the group suggested an alternative ending, one which we shall later evolve. The idea was for the soldier to repeatedly look at a photo frame of him with his now absent family, and at the end he throws it to the side, walking over it and cracking the frame as he walks back to his home.
